Since Graves and Davidoff described the mechanism of vesico-ureteral reflux in 1923, there has been some discussions about possibility of occurence of ureteral reflux in normal upper urinary tract. Gibson found the reflux in 2 out of 43 children (4.6%) who did not have any urological complaints and concluded that the reflux could occur in the normal upper urinary tract. In 1955, Iannaccone and Panzironi also found the reflux in 2% of children and have reasoned that the reflux in a healthy infant could be explained on the basis of increased intravesicular pressure due to crying or coughing.
In order to evaluate the incidence of vesico-ureteral reflux in Korean children, the voiding cystography and delayed voiding cystography were carried out on urologically symptomless 230 Korean children between 5 to 13 years of age, both male and female, and the results were analyzed and concluded as follows:
1) The vesico-ureteral reflux occured in 2.6% of the children on voiding cystogram (5 females and 1 male out of 230).
2) The vesico-ureteral reflux occilred more on the right than left ureter.
3) Among 6 cases of the vesico-ureteral reflux, one revealed complete duplication of ureter with double kidney and two were accompanied with spina bifida occulta.
4) Out of 230 cases, 68 were accompanied with spina bifida occulta in which 2 cases showed the vesico-ureteral reflux (2.1%). On the other hand, 4 out of 162 cases of non-spina bifida occulta also showed the vcsieo-ureteral reflux (2.4%).
5) No urological symptoms and/or signs were noted in 6 cases of vesico-ureteral reflux :on the observation for 18 months duration.
