      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper focuses on the similarities and differences of summaries, descriptive structures, the way of storytelling, roles of characters and functions in the story of a Korean fairy tale “The Dog and the Cat” and the chinese fairy tale, “Sinpil Maryang”. Although the summaries of “The Dog and the Cat” and “Sinpil Maryang” are different, they share a similar descriptive structure of 5 stages, starting from the beginning and moving onto development, crisis, climax and conclusion. In the Korean fairy tale “The Dog and the Cat”, the main character, an old man sends back the carp he has caught after spending all day into the water, out of pity. And for this, he has received a treasure with 8 holes from the goddess of the sea, and this made him wealth and live in a big house with his wife. However, his wife was not careful enough to keep the treasure, and the treasure gets stolen by a mean old woman. The old man is a very weak character who does not take any steps to find back the treasure. All he does is just to feel depressed without eating. Therefore, at the stage of climax, the dog and the cat appear as the 2nd characters to take care of this conflict. However, in the Chinese fairy tale called “Sinpil Maryang”, the main character Maryang has a strong will, and with this spirit, he receives a sinpil, a magical pencil from an old man with supernatural power. This magic pencil makes everything he draws come out into reality. He draws plow, cow, and farming tools to those people who are poor. Because of this magical pencil, he gets attacked from his enemies and the king, but using his magic pencil properly, he was able to get through the dangers by himself. In the story of “The Dog and the Cat”, the characters and the animals share some differences in its roles and functions, but each of the roles and functions are matched just right, showing elaborateness without any fault. In “Sinpil Maryang”, the roles and functions of characters and the animals have differences as well, but compared to “The Dog and the Cat”, the functions and roles are not relatively simple, showing less elaborateness.
