‘달’ 시학: 토미 웅게러의 『달 사람』과 베를렌의 ｢달빛｣ 비교분석과 상호텍스트성 = Poetic of the Moon : Comparative Study of Moon Man by Tomi Ungerer and Moonlight by Verlaine and the Intertextuality

This article aims to examine the mutual influence and historicity of the visual image through research on the intertextuality of the poetics of the moon in Moon Man, the picture book by Tomi Ungerer. Tomi, born in France, was influenced during his childhood and adolescence by French literature, including symbolism. Additionally, he was inspired by American graphic art, such as that of Saul Steinberg and James Thurber. AmongUngerer’s picture books, Moon Man is a work that inspires not only children but also adults with its poetic atmosphere.
First, we examine how the influence of Verlaine’s Moonlight poetry is revealed in Moon Man and the Masked Ball, in which the Commedia dell’arte characters harmonize with the main character, Moon Man, andother characters from the tales. The aim of this study is to reveal the creativity of visual images, which consists of intertextual reconstruction and combinations of images through staging.
Then, according to Michel Foucault’s concept of heterotopia, we analyze how thegallant party in Moon Man could become a heterotopic space. This is a space that can be a “literary and artistic salon” or a “garden of the picture book”, which is different from the repetitive daily life.
Finally, in the “poetics of the moon”, visual images appear several times in the form of a circle. The circle is an identifying initial linked to the letter ‘O’ in Tomi Ungerer’s artist name, TOMI, and at the same time, it is a symbol and a form that are linked to the original idea and the form and rhyme of ‘O’. Thus, weshed light on the existential poetics of Tomi Ungerer.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 그래픽예술가 토미 웅게러의 그림책 달 사람을 중심으로 ‘달’ 시학의 상호텍스트성 연구이다. 토미 웅게러는 프랑스에서 태어나 벤자맹 라비에의 그림책과 폴 베를렌의 시 등 프랑스 상징주의 문학과 예술에 영향을 받았을 뿐만 아니라 미국에서 등단하며 솔 스타인버그와 제임스 서버의 작품과 유머에 영감을 받으며 자신의 그래픽 예술 세계를 발전시켜 간다. 그의 그림책 중에 달 사람은 시적 분위기로 어린이뿐 아니라 어른들에게도 많은 시적 감흥을 주는 그림책이다.
먼저, 달 사람에서 드러나는 폴 베를렌의 시 ｢달빛｣의 영향은 어떻게 드러나는지 비교분석하여‘가면 무도회’에서 보이는 코메디아델라르테의 등장인물들이 주인공 달사람과 다른 옛이야기 캐릭터와 함께 어우러지는 향연의 장면 연출을 통해 시각 이미지의 창조성은 이미지의 상호텍스트적인 재구성과 조합으로 이루어지는 것을 밝혔다.
이어서 미셸 푸코의 사유 개념 ‘헤테로토피아’에 따라 달 사람에 나타나는 숲과 가면무도회와 연애 축제 모티프 등이 어떻게 헤테로토피아 공간이 될 수 있는지 살펴보았다. 이는 반복적인 일상과는 다른 ‘문학과 예술 살롱’ 또는 ‘그림책 정원’이 될 수 있는 일상과 다른 유토피아 공간이다.
마지막으로 ‘달의 시학’에서 시각 이미지는 보름달처럼 원의 형태로 반복적으로 등장한다. 동그라미 원은 토미 웅게러의 작가명 토미[TOMI]에서 보이는 알파벳 ‘O’와 연결된 정체성적인 이니셜임과 동시에 원적인 사고와 ‘O’의 형태와 운율이 유기적으로 연결된 상징이자 형태이다. 이를 바탕으로 토미 웅게러의 존재론적인 달시학과 그래픽 예술을 밝히고자 하였다.
