The purpose of this thesis is to make clear the characteristics of otherized feminine sexuality and the constructive mechanism of modern subject by way of sexual discourse about women represented in Lee Tae-jun’s . Especially in this novel, motherhood functions the rule system that dominates and polices female sexuality. Sexuality is the multilayered concept related with gender, class, age, rule, and institution in the various sociocultural context. Specially, in this thesis, the main focus is that feminine sexuality is related with various sociocultural layers. So feminine sexuality represents multilayered sexuality effectively.
To begin with, this thesis pays attention to the concept of body, which means the fountain of sexual desire and the expression of sexual desire. Next, I look into how Female sexual desire and body are redescribed with the projection of male desire. Finally, I will represent female sexuality as otherizing method, therefore, this otherization will show how male find his identity in the crisis.
Otherization of female sexuality is represented in motherization. This is the oldest method of restraining female sexual desire. In , degraded female with pregnancy before marriage is reborn as national mother by nurturing her son the way he should be brought up. Sungmo, the female protagonist, is the character that embodies mothering ideology. But the mothering ideology don’t exercise any practical influence in the fictive as well as in the real. Seemingly Sunmo get in the title of ‘the great mother of the nation'. But in fact, she submits herself to the greater nation by giving back her autonomous sexual right. In national discourse and colonial discourse of the imperialism, woman didn’t have gendered identity and are converted into symbol of protecting the national ethics and purity.
