One of the Korean Ministry of Knowledge Economy (MKE) funded research projects the authors are working on is to quantify energy saving potential when integrated cooling, heating, ventilation and lighting control algorithm is applied to a smart home. To investigate the aforementioned issue, the authors developed a simulation model as well as lighting systems for a selected typical Korean apartment. Especially occupant behavior is known to be one of the most uncertain parameters in building simulation. For this study, the authors monitored the occupancy pattern of 30 households and applied it to the lighting control.
In the paper, it will be elaborated whether smart control significantly outperforms the conventional on-off control. It is shown that energy savings of control strategies are strongly influenced by occupant schedule.
