고려시대의 기인에 대하여 = (A) study on the Gi-In in Ko-ryo dynasty

The author has tried to observe the object, role, and treatment of Gi-In (其人) to know the reality of Gi-In in the era of Koryo. The results are summarized under the following points.
First, the object of Gi-In was sons of hometown public official (鄕吏). Concretely speaking, they must have the position from the grade of below Byeongchangjeong (兵倉正) to the grade of above vice Byeongchangjeong (副兵倉正) King T'aejo, the koryo dynastic founder, presented position to sons who surrender to him. Their sphere of position is from the third grade of below Jwasung (左丞) to the sixth grade of above wonyun(元尹) This system which presented a surrender the position in the time of king T'aejo took effect. After that, the object of Gi-In was changed into the hometown position from the grade of below ByeongchangJeong to the grade of above vice ByeongchangJeong in the time of king MoonJong.
Second, the important role of Gi-In was that when king T'aejo sent the regional nobles' sons to seoul, he assigned them the position as a counselor on the regional administration of their hometown rather than restricting them.
For example, Gi-In had the duty of recommending Sashimgwan (事審官). Also Gi-In did a role of inspecting state examinees in their hometown. However. Showing a pretty different aspect, the rde of Gi-In was lowered in rank by degrees. That's why government strengthened the control of regional power. In the time of king Choong-Ryoˇl, Gi-In really had the job of palace repair. As a result, they got an official in the central government or hometown official.
Third, in the treatment of Gi-In, they were given the economic treatment which included Geonsigwa (田柴科) Gi-In obtained the land by the rule of GeongJeon GeonsiGwa. (更定田柴科) Gi-In got DongJecngJic (同正職) after they worked for a limited time, Therefore after finishing the limited working time, they could rise in rank.
