여성선수 신체의 객체화와 물신화: 여자 비치발리볼 사진보도의 비판여성학적 접근 = The Objectification and Fetishism of Sporting Women's Bodies: A Critical Feminist Approach to Photographic Coverage of Women's Beach Volleyball Tournament

This study attempted to analyze how the media portray female athletes' bodies through the visual contents and which social meanings are connoted through such portrayal. Using the critical feminist epistemology about women's body and sex, this study investigated the photographs of women's beach-volleyball tournament presented in the internet general portal sites. The selected 26 photographs were analyzed with the interpretive textual analysis. The results showed that, first, with the objectification of bodies, the photographic coverage treated female beach-volleyballers' bodies as things possessed and consumed. Second, the photographic portrayal of women's beach-volleyball provided readers with voyeuristic pleasure. The readers seemed to enjoy such erotic scenes as if they saw the pictures through secret cameras. Third, with the verbal messages from photographs, the possible diverse decodings were limited to look at the photographs in terms of erotic ways. This study argued that the media photographic coverage of female athletes reflected the patriarchal capitalistic attitudes and practices toward women's body and sex and that the media construction of female athletes should be based upon the athletes' bodies as subjects, not sex-objects.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 매스미디어에서 여자선수들의 신체가 어떻게 묘사되고 그러한 묘사는 어떠한 사회적인 함축적 의미를 가지고 있는가를 분석한 것이다. 이를 위해 비판여성학의 여성의 신체와 성에 대한 인식론에 기초하여, 인터넷포탈사이트 여자비치발리볼선수 사진보도를 연구대상으로 하였다. 인터넷 사이트에 게재된 총 134개 사진 가운데 여자선수의 성을 대상화하고 객체화한 사진 26개를 선정하였으며 이를 대상으로 해석적 텍스트분석을 시도하였다. 연구결과 이들 사진은 첫째 여자비치발리볼선수의 신체를 객체화하여 소유되고 소비되는 대상으로 취급하고 있으며, 둘째 여자선수를 객체화하고 성물신화하는 과정에서 비키니 수영복을 입은 선수의 동작을 사진 주인공의 허락 또는 인지 여부와 관계없이 사진 장면에 담아서, 독자들에게 관음증적 즉 훔쳐보기의 즐거움을 제공하고 있다. 셋째 사진의 시각적 이미지가 표현하는 다양한 해석의 가능성을, 사진 제목의 언어적 표현을 통해 여성의 성에 관한 것으로 제한하고 에로틱한 의미화로의 해독을 유도하고 있다. 이러한 비판여성학적 접근을 통해 이 연구는 성적 객체가 아닌 진정한 운동선수로서의 주체를 표현하는 보도 관행과 언론에서의 여성의 권력 확대를 주장하였다.
