This study aims to explore Derrida’s concept of ‘unconditional hospitality’, starting from the problem awareness that today’s education, which can be characterized as an accelerated era, is biased toward visible knowledge that guarantees immediate efficiency, including discourses on competence, and to emphasize the need for a holistic intellectual perspective to welcome intangible and invisible knowledge. To this end, first, we examine the harmony of knowledge and reflection that temporarily postpones productivity in education, and the value of reflective dwelling. Second, we analyze knowledge within the framework of Derrida’s unconditional hospitality as a new proposal to overcome the limitations of the dichotomous approach to knowledge, such as transparent knowledge that can be defined as a concept and opaque knowledge that cannot be measured. In addition, we argue the necessity of a community of thought by comprehensively examining Derrida’s unconditional hospitality and education as a response to Biesta for open education that respects the uniqueness of learners and the differences of individuals. As a result of this exploration, this study suggests the possibility of an open education that embraces both the uniqueness and opaque knowledge of human beings through a reflective dwelling that temporarily postpones productivity, beyond the educational paradigm centered on efficiency and visible results.
