      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Mexican-American Conjunto music of South Texas istaught outside of the modalities of traditional communitycultural transfer in newly created Conjunto ensembleprogrammes in regional colleges and universities as wellas in emerging lower school programmes. This articleargues that these new efforts to teach Conjunto music inlocal ensemble programmes are a model for how regionalculture in the United States can be simultaneouslypreserved as well as taught in community-embeddedways in the absence of state music programmes. Theysignal the creation of sustainability in culture and in localinstitutions. Conjunto ensemble programmes bridge thedivide between rich folk cultural forms and theincompletely realised or implemented concepts ofintangible heritage in the United States, where regionalmusic is fast disappearing or losing coherence andculture, and is often reshaped into something closer to acommodity. Fostering sustainability in Conjunto music andculture through ensembles remains explicitly a locallysourcedand politically committed approach.
