Traditionnal Crafts as a New Attraction for Cultural Tourism

The project CRAFTATTRACT (Traditional crafts as a newattraction for cultural tourism) was implemented by theMuseums of Hrvatsko Zagorje and Slovenian partners in thecross-border area of Croatia and Slovenia. The Museums ofHrvatsko Zagorje have considerable experience in exploringtangible and intangible heritage in the region and goodexperience of co-operation with traditional craftspersons,who are contracted on a regular basis to demonstrate theirskills in the museums. The project CRAFTATTRACT joinedtogether various experts in the border region of Croatia andSlovenia in order to foster heritage as a driving force forresponsible tourist development, thus establishing a soundbasis for the preservation of crafts. It was implemented withEU funding through the initiative INTERREG IIIA NeighbourhoodProgramme, Slovenia-Hungary-Croatia. After the projectsuccessfully completed all the envisaged activities and the EUsupport was terminated, the project continued to fulfil itsmission. The museums continue to pursue the project’s goals.
The project also won international and national recognition.
Furthermore, it played a significant role in the process ofsafeguarding intangible heritage in Croatia, especially in thepreparation of the files for the national list of protected intangibleheritage and for the inscription of the two elements from theregion on the Representative List of UNESCO.
