<국문초록>

<Abstract>
The purpose of this research is to explore the impact of the group therapy using sand tray on aggression and peer relationship in neglected children. This study has two research questions: firist, whether the group therapy using sand tray affects neglected children's the aggressive expressions or not, second, whether the group therapy using sand tray affects neglected children's the peer relationship or not.
To test effectiveness of the program, the researcher implemented pre- and post- test by using two scale: Spielberger et al.(1988)’s AX-Anger Expression Scale revised by Kim(1997) and Jeon(1991) and Hudson’s Index of Peer relation (1982) revised by Kim (2000). These scales have been modified to reflect the cultural differences and the level of Korean children's age. The data were analyzed through Maan-Whitney U Test. The researcher, also, described the processes of change that children showed in accordance with the stages of group therapy using sand tray.
Four participants were referred from S community children center in M because they have been determined as more neglected children through assessment. Four children participated to seven group therapy sessions using sand tray, once a week for two months. This program was implemented through October to November, 2006. The group therapy using sand tray included six stages developed by Boik and Goodwin (2000): Formation of world, experience and rearrangement, treatment, photograph, transference, disintegration.
This is a summary of results.
First, there were no statistically significant impacts of group therapy using sand tray on aggressive expression total scores. One of sub-variables, control of aggression, however, was statistically significantly affected by intervention and aggressive expression among all children declined. This result shows the effectiveness of group therapy using sand tray for decreasing aggressive expressions in neglected children.
Second, although there were statistically significant changes in peer relationship scores between pre-test and post-test the researcher could see positive effects of group therapy using sand tray for peer relationship.
Third, the children showed behavioral changes. In the early sessions, the children immediately expressed anger when another child touched their figures and they fought to have figures which they wanted. In the later sessions, however, the children did not only try to touch other’s figures but also they were more likely to make mutual concessions. In addition, in the later sessions, the children showed the decreased criticizing words and behaviors and the increased concentrations on sand tray, along with making a story and decorating sand tray, in contrast to earlier sessions.
These results of observations present the group therapy using sand tray may be effective for decreasing aggressive expressions and increasing positive peer relationships in neglected children.
The group therapy using sand tray can help the neglected children express repressed emotions and experience positive interactions. Also children can learn now to control their needs and to care other people.
