인격 동일성에 대한 파핏과 칸트의 이해

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 인격 동일성 개념을 폐기해야 한다고 주장하는 파핏의 논거들을 살펴보고, 이를 칸트의 인격 이해에 비추어 비판한다. 논문은 다음과 같이 구성되어 있다. 2장에서는 파핏이 인격 동일성에 대한 물리적 기준과 심리적 기준을 비판하기 위해 제시하는 논거들에 대해서 살펴본다. 3장에서는 파핏이 심리적 연결됨 내지 연속성의 관점에서 우리의 삶을 비인격적으로 기술하기 위해 제시하는 심리적 환원주의와, 이를 통해 인격 동일성에 대한 데카르트적 비환원주의에 대해 제기하는 비판에 대해 살펴본다. 4장과 5장에서는 데카르트적 비환원주의를 거부하더라도 우리 삶에서 중요하게 작동하는 인격 동일성의 차원이 남게 된다는 것을 칸트의 인격 이해를 통해 주장한다. 인격 동일성의 표상은 비록 사고하는 ‘나’에 대한 객관적 인식을 제공하는 것은 아니지만, 우리의 이성적 사유와 도덕적 행위의 가능성을 뒷받침하는 전제로서 남겨져야 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

I examine Parfit’s criticism of the notion of personal identity, and criticize Parfit’s arguments in turn in terms of Kant’s view of personal identity. The paper proceeds as follows. In chapter 2, I examine Parfit’s arguments that neither physical continuity nor psychological continuity can function as the criteria for personal identity. In chapter 3, I explicate Parfit’s psychological reductionism according to which the content of our lives can be exhaustively explained in terms of psychological connectedness and psychological continuity without presupposing the identity of person. I also examine the way in which Parfit criticizes the Cartesian non-reductionism of personal identity in terms of his psychological reductionism. In chapters 4 and 5, I argue that there remains the notion of personal identity which is crucially operating in and cannot be removed from our lives by examining Kant’s view of personal identity. Although the notion of personal identity cannot provide any objective cognition of the persisting self, the notion of personal identity should remain as the presupposition which grounds the possibility of our rational thinking and moral acts.
