‘도덕적 악으로부터의 완전한 해방’에 대한 하나의 시론적 고찰 - 토마스 아퀴나스의 이론을 중심으로 - = A Consideration on the Possibility of the Absolute Liberation from Moral Evil according to Thomas Aquinas

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문의 목적은 인간이 도덕적 악으로부터 완전히 풀려나, 도덕적 악을 범할 수 없는 상태에 이를 가능성과 그 조건에 대해서 13세기 그리스도교 철학자 토마스아퀴나스의 이론을 사례로 살펴보는 것이다. 이 문제와 관련하여 토마스는 ‘인간은 자연 본성적 측면에서 고찰하면 결코 도덕적 악을 범하지 않을 수 없고, 다만 초본성적 상태에서 은총을 통해서 도덕적 악을 범할 수 없는 상태에 놓이게 된다’고 주장한다. 그런데 이러한 주장에 따라 ‘악을 범하지 않을 수 없음’이 인간의 본성에 속하는 것이라면, ‘악을 범할 수 없음’은 인간의 ‘본성을 벗어남’을 함축할 것이고, 그 결과 악을 범할 수 없는 상태는 인간에게 귀속될 수 없는 것이라는 우려를 낳게 된다. 이러한 우려에 대해 토마스는 ‘은총은 자연을 전제하고 완성하고 고양한다’는 원칙에 따라, 은총에 의해 완성되고 고양된 것은 인간 의지의 ‘본성’자체로서, 은총에 의해 고양된 인간 영혼의 능력은 존재에 있어서 여전히 인간의 능력이지만, 고양된 것인 한에서 그것을 자기 자신과 닮은 상태로 고양시킨 신적 본성의 능력에 참여하게 된다는 논지를 전개한다. ‘초본성적 도움을 받아 완전해질 수 있음’을 본성적 능력으로 가진 인간은 지복직관의 상태에서 은총을 통해서 악을 범할 수 없는 상태에 놓이게 된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The aim of this work is to investigate the possibility and the conditions for the complete liberation of man from moral evil on the basis of the Thomistic theory of evil. Regarding this problem, Thomas argued that man in the state of nature is inevitable to commit moral evil, but by grace in his supernatural state of visio beatifica can be placed in a state in which he cannot commit moral evil. This argument, however, seems to result in the concern that the complete liberation from moral evil cannot be attributed to human who pursuits and finally come to it. For if “non posse non peccare” is part of human nature, “non posse peccare” seems to be unable to be attributed to human being. Given that concern, Thomas argues as follows: According to the principle that ‘grace presupposes, completes and exalts nature’, it is the ‘nature’ of human will that is perfected and exalted by grace, so that the liberum arbitrium of the human will, exalted by grace, is still an act of human being with regard to being; In so far as it is exalted, however, it shares in the power of the divine nature, which raises it to itself. The human being, to whose nature it belongs to become perfected and exalted with supernatural help, can be therefore placed in the state of visio beatifica in a state in which he cannot commit any evil.
