로울랜슨 부인의 포로 서사가 드러내는존재론적 진실의 문제

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구의 목적은 인식론에 기반한 전통적 진실 개념이 흔들리고 있는 포스트 진실의 시대에 전통적 진실과는 다른 존재론적 진실 개념이 가진 사회적 함의에 대해 생각해 볼 기회를 제공하는 것이다. 이를 위해 17세기에 출판된 로울랜슨 부인의 포로 서사를 존재론적 진실의 관점에서 해석한다. 로울랜슨 부인은 포로 생활 중 아메리카 원주민들과 상호작용하고 새로운 사건들을 경험하면서 만나는 존재자들을 새롭게 규정한다. 이 과정에서 원주민과 하나님에 대한 두 개의 다른 규정이 만들어진다. 이것은 각각의 존재론적 진실을 가진 두 개의 세계가 공존한다는 것을 보여준다. 원주민에 대한 모순되는 진술들 사이의 충돌은 원주민에 대한 기존의 편견과 거짓에 균열을 가하고 그것들을 전복시킬 가능성을 가진 것이라기보다는, 두 세계가 만나는 사건으로 이해될 수 있다. 하나의 대상에 대한 거짓과 진실이 대립하는 것이 아니라 각각의 진실을 가진 두 세계가 만나는 것이라면, 중요한 것은 어느 한쪽을 배척하고 폐기하는 일이 아니라 두 진실이, 두 세계가 어떻게 서로를 이해할 수 있을지를 고민하는 일이 될 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study aims to explore the social implications of ontological truth as a distinct concept in our post-truth era, where traditional, epistemologically grounded notions of truth are increasingly challenged. To this end, the study analyzes Mary Rowlandson's 17th-century captivity narrative from an ontological perspective. During her captivity, Rowlandson redefines the beings she encounters—namely, Native Americans and God—through her interactions and the unfolding of new experiences. This process yields two contrasting conceptions of these figures, highlighting the coexistence of two worlds, each with its own ontological truth. Rather than serving to dismantle or correct existing prejudices about Native Americans and God, the tension between Rowlandson's conflicting descriptions points to an encounter between two distinct worlds. Here, the central concern is not to reject one perspective in favor of another but to consider how these two truths—these two worlds—might find a way to understand each other.
