‘경찰다움’ 함양을 위한 ‘경찰극’ 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 ‘경찰다움’ 함양을 위한 프로그램으로서 ‘경찰극’의 효과를 탐색하는데 목적이 있다. 먼저 보알의 ‘토론연극’, 아리스토텔레스의 ‘카타르시스’를 개관하면서 이들이 오늘날 어떻게 수용되고 있는지 보고, 연장선에서 경찰극의 의의를 살펴본다. 계속해서 ‘경찰극 방법’과 ‘토론연극 형식’ 사이의 공유 지점을 찾아보고, 경찰극 참여자들의 소감에서 드러난 ‘카타르시스’ 경험이 ‘경찰다움’ 함양에 어떤 영향을 주었는지 분석해본다. 분석 결과, 교육생들은 경찰극 안에서 경찰다움의 요소로서 ‘인간이해’와 ‘실무능력’의 중요성을 깨달았던 것으로 확인되었다. 이를테면 참여자는 역할을 하면서 시민 존중이 결여된 말과 행동, 숙달되지 않은 경찰 장비 조작이 공권력에 대한 시민 불신의 원인이 될 수 있다는 사실에서 낭패감을 맛보지만 경찰극 종료 후 진행되는 인터뷰, 동료들과 질의응답 그리고 리더의 격려와 코칭에서 경찰관으로서 자신감과 정체성을 회복할 수 있는 기회로 삼았던 듯하다. 이는 경찰극이 토론연극의 형식과 맞닿아있으면서, 카타르시스를 발현하는 장치로서 기능하고 있음을 시사한다. 요컨대 경찰 교육생들은 경찰극의 방법과 촉진자의 리더십에서 두려움과 불안이 해소되는 경험, 즉 카타르시스를 느꼈고, 그것이 참여자들에게 ‘경찰다움’을 정립할 수 있는 동력으로 작용했다고 볼 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study aims to explore the effectiveness of ‘police theater’ as a program for fostering ‘police professionalism.’ It begins by reviewing Boal’s ‘Forum Theatre’ and Aristotle’s concept of ‘Catharsis’, examining how these ideas are received today and discussing the significance of police theater in this context. The study then identifies commonalities between the ‘police theater method’ and the ‘Forum Theatre format’, analyzing how participants’ experiences of catharsis contribute to cultivating ‘police professionalism’. The analysis reveals that trainees recognized the importance of ‘understanding people’ and ‘practical skills’ as essential elements of police professionalism through police theater. For instance, participants experienced frustration when realizing that actions lacking respect for citizens and unskilled handling of police equipment could contribute to public distrust in authority. However, post-performance interviews, peer Q&A sessions, and encouragement and coaching from leaders offered participants opportunities to regain confidence and re-establish their identity as police officers. This suggests that police theater functions as a mechanism for eliciting catharsis while aligning with the format of Forum Theatre. In sum, police trainees experienced relief from fear and anxiety through the methods of police theater and the facilitator’s leadership, which allowed participants to establish their ‘police professionalism’.
