한국전쟁 후 ‘반공포로’에 대한 기억과 기념 = Memories and commemorations of the anti-communist prisoners in South Korea after the Korean war

국문 초록 (Abstract)

한국전쟁 반공포로는 한국전쟁 공식 내러티브에서 대한민국의 정당성 내지 우월성을 옹호하는 주요한 근거로 활용되었다. 그러나 한국전쟁 기념에서 이들은 이질적 존재였다. 그것은 반공포로가 대한민국의 '적'이었다는 사실에서 비롯된다. 따라서 반공포로가 대한민국의 국민이 되기 위해서는 '갱생'의 과정을 겪어야만 했다. 문신과 혈서, 군입대라는 존재증명이 그것이었다. 이 존재증명을 통해 반공포로의 반공투쟁신화는 완성되었고, 반공포로는 국민이 되었다. 이 반공정체성을 실천하는 것, 즉 계속적인 반공투쟁만이 반공포로가 국민임을 증명하는 것이었다. 반공포로에 대한 기념은 곧 반공투쟁에의 동원을 의미하는 것이었다.
한편 반공포로들의 극단적인 반공투쟁과 정치적 동원은 반공투쟁신화에 심각한 균열을 초래했다. 반공포로들의 과도한 동원과 투쟁은 '북한군 출신'이라는 과거의 흔적을 일깨웠고, 사회안정을 해치는 위험한 '국민'이라는 인식을 조장했다. 그러나 역설적이게도 '위험한 국민'이라는 이미지에서 벗어나는 유일한 길은 더 많은 '반공투쟁'이었다. 이와 같은 역설적 상황은 반공포로에 대한 국가적 기념을 통해 끊임없이 재생산되었다.
이 역설이 의미하는 것은 한국전쟁 반공포로의 불안정한 국민적 위치이다. 포로기념을 통해 국가는 끊임없이 반공포로들을 반공투쟁에 동원하고 반공투쟁을 재생산하였지만, '북한군' 출신이라는 이들의 흔적을 말소한 것은 아니었다. 반공포로들에 대한 동원은 무엇보다도 공산주의를 경험한 '북한출신'이라는 조건이 가지는 효용성 때문이었다. 북한출신이라는 흔적이 지워지지 않고 기념되는 한 반공포로들의 국민적 위치는 끊임없이 흔들릴 수밖에 없었다. 반공포로들의 반공투쟁이야기가 한국전쟁사 공식 내러티브에서 통일적으로 구성될 수 없는 것 또한 이와 같은 국민적 위치의 불안정성을 반영한다고 할 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In the official narratives of the Korean War in the Republic of Korea (hereafter ROK), the anti-communist prisoners provided a platform for asserting the ROK's legitimacy and superiority over communist North Korea. After the Korean War, the ROK government called the anti-communist prisoners the 'anti-communist patriotic youth' and generated a myth of anti-communist struggle. As a result, the public image of anti-communist prisoners were transformed from the 'enemies' into the 'great fighters for anti-communism'.
However, when it comes to the commemorations of the Korean War and the discourse of Korean citizenry, the anti-communist prisoners became marginalized. To be legitimate members of the ROK, anti-communist prisoners had to erase their former identity as the enemy, and to go through a 'process of rebirth'. In POW camps, the anti-communist prisoners proved their identity as citizens of the ROK by writing in blood and getting tattoos that could show their sincere desires for membership of the ROK. For the anti-communist prisoners joining the ROK army after their release from POW camps was one of the major courses of identification as citizens of the ROK. As such, the myth of anti-communist struggle of the POWs were constructed. Being a part of the anti-communist struggle was the only way for the anti-communist prisoners to become proper members of the ROK. The anti-communist prisoners have been commemorated not as a victims or contributors for nation-building, but as a 'fighters' against communism. For this reason, that the anti-communist prisoners has been functioned not as a commemorating object but as one of the most major mobilizing object of anti-communist struggle in South Korea.
