김남천 비평에서 발자크 관련 논의의 도입 과정 = The process of introduction to the discussion on Balzac in Kim Nam-cheon’s criticism

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 김남천 비평에서 발자크 관련 논의가 도입되는 과정을 그것이 진행되는 상황에 밀착하여 살펴본 것이다. 말하자면 ‘발자크 연구 노트’라는 도달점을 전제하지 않고, 발자크에 대한 김남천의 관심이 내적인 발생과 전개의 흐름을 따라가는 한편 외부 상황의 영향에 반응하면서 드러내는 있는 그대로의 실상을 들여다보려고 한 것이다. 김남천 비평의 초기 국면에는 발자크에 대한 부정적인 태도도 발견되며 그런 태도는 그가 엥겔스의 ‘발자크론’을 접한 이후에도 한동안 지속되기도 한다. 그런 상황이 발자크에 대한 관심으로 전환되는 과정에는 몇 단계의 불연속적인 과정이 놓여 있는데, 이 글은 기존 연구에서는 인지되지 못했던 김남천의 산문 ｢발자크와 스탕달｣과 ｢최근 독서초(抄)｣를 그 과정의 의미 있는 지점으로 제시하고 그 텍스트 상황을 실증적으로 밝히면서 발자크를 향해 단계적으로 다가가는 김남천의 의식의 궤적을 확인하고자 했다. ‘발자크 연구 노트’ 등 여기에 이어진 보다 본격적인 김남천의 발자크 관련 논의에 대해서는 후속 연구를 통해 이어나갈 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper closely examines the process in which discussions on Balzac are introduced in Kim Nam-cheon’s criticism, in the context of the situation in which they are taking place. In other words, it does not presuppose the point of arrival called ‘Balzac Research Notes’, but attempts to look into the reality as it is revealed by Kim Nam-cheon’s interest in Balzac, following the flow of internal occurrence and development, while reacting to the influence of external situations. In the early stages of Kim Nam-cheon’s criticism, a negative attitude toward Balzac is also found, and such an attitude persists for a while even after he encounters Engels’s view on Balzac. There are several discontinuous stages in the process in which such a situation is transformed into interest in Balzac. This paper presents Kim Nam-cheon’s prose “Balzac and Stendhal” and “Recent Readings”, which were not recognized in previous studies, as meaningful points in the process, and empirically reveals the textual situation, and attempts to confirm the trajectory of Kim Nam-cheon’s consciousness as he gradually approaches Balzac. We will continue with follow-up research on Kim Nam-cheon’s more in-depth discussion of Balzac, including his ‘Balzac Research Notes.’
