Sang-Bin Lee (2023). Overcoming temporal barriers in audio description: A study of non-synchronic strategies in Netflix movies. This study delves into the intricate challenges and innovative techniques associated with overcoming time constraints in audio-described movies. It particularly focuses on the difficulties encountered by audio describers when narrating events or on-screen credits that overlap the film’s original soundtrack. To shed light on this complex task, the research analyzes scenes from four movies available on Netflix, namely “True Grit,” “The Midnight Sky,” “Hold the Dark,” and “World War Z.” This analysis highlights four pivotal techniques employed by seasoned audio describers: inserting, grouping, catching-up, and pre-describing. Each technique is explored comprehensively, offering nuanced insights that are invaluable to both practitioners and scholars in the field of audio description. The findings of this study foster a deeper understanding of audiovisual content amid the increasingly inclusive media landscape, paving the way for a more equitable viewing experience for all audiences.
