The purpose of this study is to examine whether and to what extent news articles posted on the portal site NAVER in South Korea have become tabloidized. Tabloidization is defined as the phenomenon that occurs when quality press adopts the sensational characteristics of tabloids. Based on previous studies on tabloidization, this study examined three characteristics of tabloid journalism: news topics of tabloids, sensationalism, and news production practices. A content analysis of 1,317 news published by 14 newspaper companies and news agencies that have a total of more than three million subscriptions on the portal site NAVER showed that 29.9% of news articles dealt with tabloid topics, such as crime, scandals, and celebrities. With regard to news content, more than 60% of news included sensational components. In terms of news gathering practices, an analysis original reporting, which was determined by examining whether each news article was composed by the wires, other news media, or individuals’ social media postings without their own verification, showed that only 37.2% of news stories were based on original reporting.
