Now our society has come to an era in which information is acquired and delivered through diverse visual images. Such visual images contain social and cultural values and have huge positive or negative influences on students. Especially, visual culture education enabling to critically and comprehensively understand visual images based on high-quality and diverse visual experiences is urgently required for middle school students who are faced with violent and negative visual images and confused over their identity in their adolescence.
All the living environment in daily life is composed of design. Images of such environment we experience are mostly produced through design processes. However, in order to properly enjoy design culture, a sensuous and visual way of thinking is required. Among various areas of design, especially the visual communication design can enhance abilities of more effective information delivery and visual thinking. Thus, this study aimed to develop understanding of visual communication design and visual communication by linking visual culture education with design education. Also it aimed to explore possibilities for visual culture education by using web contents as tools to motivate students to learn.
To achieve these goals, the following tasks were concentratively explored and identified.
First, what visual culture is was explored based on reviews of definition and areas of visual culture.
Second, the necessity of visual culture education was identified through theoretical backgrounds of visual culture education and concrete directions and methods in education were introduced.
Third, the possibility of linking visual culture education with visual communication design was explored by illuminating the importance of design education as visual culture and reviewing the 7th Education Revision Plan.
Fourth, contents for learning and direction were established through analysis of areas of visual communication design and textbooks.
Fifth, the teaching and learning model was designed and presented based on the study.
The study aimed to emphasize the necessity of visual culture education and the importance of visual communication design and to develop a teaching and learning model to promote learners' proper understanding of visual culture and their subjectivity as culture producers. To achieve these goals, the following model for learning and teaching has been composed.
First, the model of teaching and learning, composed of 4 steps, attempted integration of art subject by linking aesthetic experiences, expression and appreciation. Also it prepared to consider all the results and process of learning by evaluating achievement level, activity site and attitude according to learning objectives.
Second, the first step aims toward understanding of visual communication design and helping to have a critical experiences in images. For this, students are provided with opportunities to explore information to find problems on their own and to find solutions in natural ways via filling group activities forms.
Third, the second and the third steps help to establish identity and clearly determine the subject through activities trying to finding oneself. It is also designed to achieve diverse and concrete conceptions by using design plan activities sheets.
Fourth, the fourth step helps to develop abilities to interpret works of art from diverse perspectives through activities presenting and appreciating works of art of their own and friends. Also it helps to have experiences to understand other people.
Based on the results of this study, suggestions were made as follows on how to teach design in visual culture education.
First, visual culture education is cultural education for understanding the meaning of visual images containing social and cultural values.
Second, visual culture education is closely related with design, and among design areas, visual communication design requires abilities to interpret visual images critically and to express visually for the communication of information.
In order to accommodate and teach visual communication design adequately in visual culture education, there should be continuous research on the systematic application of design programs, various teaching‐learning methods, and their effects.
