This study attempts to suggest the proper size of chairs to be used in child-care facilities on the basis of ergonomic studies. The chair has been essential part of human living since they appeared in history about 4,000 years ago. It has been produced for efficient labour as well as maximum comfort. Though its primary function is to be seated in, they are also expected to be helpful to avoid accidents and illness, to promote health and to alleviate fatigue.
For the children of age three through five, who are in one of the critical periods in terms of their physical development, the ergonomic attention should be paid to the chairs in which they seat. This study has examined the behavioral characteristics of those children in order to determine the suitable measurement of the chairs. For the accurate statistics on the bodily size of the children of those ages National Anthropometric Survey of Korea published in 1997 has been used.
The goal of Ergonomics is to enhance productivity, safety, convenience and quality of life through studying human performance and applying its knowledge to the design of its technological systems. Therefore, it is primarily concerned with human factors-human behavior and attributes including human psychology, sensibility, human relationship with the environment, and so on.
It should be acknowledged that children have unique characteristics of their own. Thus they should not be understood simply through down-scaling the behavior and attributes of the adult, Consequently, ergonomic study for children should pay more attention to their unique factors with an understanding of their physical development.
