In order to study RFSPs (Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphisms) of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in Korean population, the auhtors obtained the mtDNA from 60 placentae and digested with 6 kinds of restriction endonucleases (Hea Ⅱ, Hind Ⅲ, Bam HI, Eco Ri, Pst Ⅰ and Hpa Ⅰ) recognizing hexanucleotide. And RFLPs for each mtDNA were analyzed. All of the mtDNA obtained from 60 placenate were classifed into seven mtDNA types (type 1, 6, 8, 13, 27 and 7^*) by combining the results obtained from the digestion of mtDNA with 6 kinds of restriction endonucleases. However, the type 7^*(4-1-1-1-1) which was not reported in other racial populations was referred to as a new type. In the calculation of nucleotide diversity the authors obtained the mean value of δ = 0,00688±0,00296. As the results mentioned above it is concluded that Korean population is being to Mongoloid racial population in relation to RFLPs of mtDNA comparing with oriental population which is consisted of many races including Korea. However, for the more valuable results of mtDNA RFLPs in Korean population, the authors believe that the more extensive samples and various informative restriction endonucleases are required.
