In this study, the effect of training program consisting of ‘ Thi따ing style diagnosis'
training and 8 lessons of CoRT(1) was reported. Further, in conjunction with
that, the characteristic features of lateral thinking developed by de Bono and his
CoRT thinking lessons were analyzed.
Six characteristic features of de Bono's lateral thinking were discussed. They were
such as (i) thinking as learnable skill(s), with its definition of ‘the operating skill
with which intelligence acts upon experience', (ii) two types of thinking such as vertical
and lateral (horizontal), (iii) two stages of thinking such as perceptual and analytical
(processing), (iv) mind as pattern - forming and pattern - using system, (v)
errors in thinking occuring most1y at the perceptual stage, and (vi) possibility of
teaching thinking directly using attention -directing tools independent of subject
matters.
Thinking styles diagnosis trainîng using the thinking style rating scales developed
by the author aimed to identify individual’s predominant thinking style(s) both at the
perceptual and processing stage and, furthermore, to train for broader repetoire of
thinking ways in relation to the potential strengthes and weaknesses. 8 lessons of
CoRT 1 used were such as PMI, CAF, C&S, AGO, APC, OPV, FIP, and Decisions.
To measure the effect, the author developed the ‘Thinking approach questionnaire'
and pre - and post - test was given.
The training program was found very effective. Subjects developed wider breadth
of perception (such as searching for rnany relevant factors, considering consequences,
attending to other’s views, et al) and, thereby, was found attempting more reflective
and open way of thinking.
