The recently increased incidence of hospital infection due to the opportunistic pathogens necessitates reevaluation of bactericidal activities of antiseptics and disinfectants. The author examined the in vitro bactericidal activity of several antiseptics and disinfectants generally used in the general hospitals in Taegu city, which were 1%, 2% gentian violet, 10% povidoneiodine, 2% boric acid, 2% mercurochrome, 3% H20 2, 70% isopropyl alcohol, 2% iodine tincture 0.02%, 0.2% potassium permanganate, 2% zephanon, 4% hibiclen, 5% hibitan, 75% ethanol, 2% glutaraldehyde, 1%, 2% cresol 1%, 3% phenol and 10% formalin. Clinical strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Salmonella typhi, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Klebsiella oxytoca, Proteus mirabilis, Proteus vulgaris, Serratia marcescens, Acinetobacter baumannii, Acinetobacter lwof fii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pseudomonas chlororaphis, Enterobacter aerogenes, Enterobacter cloacae, Bacillus subtilis, and Candida albicans were inoculated in to the several diluted solutions of antiseptic and disinfectant added with 1% human plasma, and 0.01 ml were plated to blood agar plates for bacterial survival at 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 minutes. The results showed that : 1. All strains tested were killed within 30 seconds at 4 OC and 22°C in 2% zephanon, 4% hibiclen, and 5% hibitan. 2. All strains, except spore-forming Bacillus subtilis tested were killed within 30 seconds at 4°C and 22°C in 2% glutaraldehyde, 3% phenol, 70% isopropyl alcohol, 2% iodine tincture, and 75% ethanol. 3. At 22°C, all strains, except spore-forming Bacillus subtilis tested were killed within 30 seconds in 1% cresol, but at 4 OC S. au reus and S. epidermidis were alived for one minute and A. lwoffii were alived for 30 seconds. 4. All strains tested were alived until! 32 minutes at 4 OC and 22 OC in 2% boric acid and 0.02% potassium permanganate. 5. In generaly, the maximum exposure time for bacterial killing of antiseptics was more prolonged at 4 OC than at 22°C.
