Offline bookstores selling paper books are shrinking due to the popularity of online bookstores and the promotion of new media other than paper. In response to this crisis, many offline bookstores have begun to integrate the functions of indoor spaces such as museums, restaurants, and salons, transforming bookstores into inclusive cultural spaces. Currently, for the main audience of reading - children rely more on storytelling or specific scenes of their lives or fantasies in the reading process to think and interact more deeply because their minds are in a developmental stage. The purpose of this study is to suggest a design plan that can be accommodated more easily for children’s bookstores by establishing the necessary conditions for children’s bookstores to realize spatial narratives by analyzing the elements and characteristics of the narrative space.
This study creates a framework for spatial narrative research based on Chatman’s narrative theory research, and through case analysis on children’s bookstores, discovers unique narrative generating elements included in it, and proposes three designs for children’s bookstores narrative space creation.
Through the investigation of this research, it is recommended to introduce the method of narrative space design into the space of bookstores in order to solve the difficulties faced by offline bookstores.
