‘샤를리 엡도 사건’과 프랑스 내 소수자들 = 무슬림, 유대인 그리고 프랑스 공화국

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 ‘샤를리 엡도 사건’의 원인을 분석함에 있어 프랑스 내 소수자들인 무슬림, 유대인 그리고 프랑스 공화국 간의 관계를 고려한다. 그간 샤를리 엡도 사건이 언론 등 다양한 매체를 통해 표현의 자유, 다른 종교에 대한 존중, 무슬림 이주민의 통합 등과 관련하여 활발하게 논의되었다면, 본 논문에서는 이 사건의 역사적 맥락을 ‘유대인’이라는 새로운 주체를 중심으로 재해석 해보려 시도하였다. 필자는 샤를리 엡도 사건과 같은 테러 사건을 방지하기 위해서 프랑스사회가 할 수 있는 것이 다문화주의 채택 혹은 라이시테 강화 등 단순히 프랑스 내 무슬림 이민자문제만 고려해서는 안 된다고 생각한다. 본 논문은 보다 근원적으로 이스라엘 혹은 이슬람과 관련된 중동문제, ‘단일한 공화국’을 추구하는 프랑스 공화국의 원칙에 대한 검토뿐만 아니라, 프랑스 사회의 오랜 치부인 반유대주의와 홀로코스트에 대한 강박관념 또한 새롭게 검토할 것을 주장한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article deals with Muslims and Jews as minorities in France and with the French Republic in order to analyse the cause of the Charlie Hebdo incident. The debate regarding freedom of expression versus respect for other religions was among the most prevalent explanations offered by the mass media, along with issues related to second-generation Muslim immigrants of Maghreb descent in France. This article tries to reinterpret the historical context of this incident considering Muslims and Jews as minorities in France. I argue that French society should consider not only the domestic problems, such as its multiculturalist policies and the enforcement of laïcité principle in schools, but also the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the Middle East in order to prevent future incidents such as the Charlie Hebdo attack. I emphasize that the French government felt remorseful for their involvement in the Holocaust and that this remorse, it led to French society’s discrimination against Muslims, which in turn seems to have caused these incidents.
