The purpose of this paper is to define the genre characteristics of these works by examining the narrative method and formative expression style of documentary comics, and to analyze the artistic value of this genre. Documentary comics expand the scope of understanding of Korean modern and contemporary history by unraveling topical messages contained in individuals or historical events in their works, and cartoon works, popular art, are used to heal the lives of people who have been hurt in ‘distorted or forgotten history’. Through the analysis of the work, we tried to find out that it has the social value of conveying the message. To this end, we analyzed how cartoons expressed with symbolic and metaphorical imagination can contain reality, and analyzed how documentary comics record and reproduce Korea’s modern and contemporary history by interpreting the narrative structure of cartoons.
It is the value of documentary comics to share historical events that are rarely recorded except for the testimonies of survivors with lively realism and shared with us today. Cartoons castrate the imagination as much as possible and allow us to witness the scene of the incident. It conveys the message that we must remember, reflect, and commemorate that time so that the same history will never repeat again by teleporting us in the present to the scene of the tragic event.
In addition, this thesis tried to contain the scalability of cartoon research in that the analyzed cartoon works would be a material for accessing and analyzing Korean history through new media as a reflection of the era of modern and contemporary history in Korea.
Based on the analysis of the genre characteristics of documentary comics derived through research, it is expected that the creative basis for vitalizing diverse cartoons will be expanded by considering the sociocultural meaning of non-fiction cartoon creation.
