This study examined how the reading instruction of idioms configuration through illustration affect the understanding and writing of idioms configuration for students with hearing impairment. Students with hearing impairment show retard in language development due to hearing loss in their babyhood or childhood, and they have difficulties in reading and writing in schools. Furthermore, they are frustrated with understanding and expression of idioms configuration, proverbs and four-character Chinese idioms used metaphorically or figuratively in communication with normal people when they become adults.
Therefore, the strategy to understand the characteristics of students with hearing impairment and suitable for the instruction, that means the instruction methods to give motivation and interests on the understanding and writing of idioms configuration by presenting illustration through visual information channel which is residual ability showed positive results by improving the understanding and writng of idioms configuration.
This study selected three students in middle and high schools with hearing impairment who implanted artificial ear cochlears before entering school, and proceeds the study with the multiple-baseline design across for them. The test period was from July 19, 2011 to November 19, 2011, and the number of intervention was 26-32 times by conducting it two times per week. The time of intervention was 40-45 minutes per one time. The intervention was conducted at the quiet environment like therapy room and home not to interrupt the test conditions after school. It was conducted 3-8 times in basic phase, 20 times in intervention phase and 3 times in maintaining phase.
The conclusions from this study are as follows.
First, the intervention of reading instruction program through illustration was effective on all three students with hearing impairment to improve the understanding ability of idioms configuration.
Second, the intervention of reading instruction program through illustration was effective on all three students with hearing impairment to improve the writing ability of idioms configuration.
Third, the intervention of reading instruction program through illustration for all three students with hearing impairment showed that the accomplishment rate of understanding ability is higher than the accomplishment rate of writing ability.
Fourth, the intervention of reading instruction program through illustration was effective for all three students with hearing impairment to maintain it after the test
This study suggests followings based on the result of the effect of reading instructions through illustration on the understanding and writing of idioms configuration for students with hearing impairment .
This study verified that the intervention of program to middle and high school students was effective. Subsequent studies need to examine the early intervention of the program for the students in 4-6th grade of elementary school for them not to feel difficult about the idioms configuration since the reading ability of students with hearing impairment is accomplished in 3-4th grade. Moreover, it will be necessary to have studies to pursue quality improvement of communication by mediating adults who have difficulties due to hearing impairment occurred in their 20s or 30s, and compare the intervention effects on various age groups.
