To generate a reference basis for future mascot design, this study will analyse the visual images, changes and movements of national cultural symbols in past Asian Games mascots. This will also facilitate an improved understanding of the spread and fusion of mascots in Asia. Accordingly, this study selected a total of 11 mascots from the 9th to the 19th Asian Games, using theoretical considerations to develop an interpretive body including icon, index and symbol. This paper summarised the results by using semiotics analysis to analyse visual, motion and symbol information for each of the chosen mascots and deriving this into a matrix. This study concludes that the icon symbols used in the Asian Games mascots are expressed in a way that visualises and symbolises the host country’s national and anthropomorphic cultural characteristics. As well as delivering a public message that includes interesting images and emotions, these icon symbols utilise non-verbal gestures such as facial expressions and gestures to metaphorically express the national cultural symbols of each country. The paper’s third finding was that the meaning of national cultural symbols unique to each country is conveyed through both visual information (icon symbol) and motion information (index symbol) in Asian Games mascots. Moreover, Asian Games mascots reflect changing times, sometimes appearing in the form of groups, while the elements of national cultural symbols are becoming more diversified. The study’s authors believe that its conclusions have implications for future research on mascots, while this paper’s mascot symbol analysis method may be used to inform future mascot design projects.
