This study inquires into the types and characteristics of form and content of letters of condolence focused on ones in 『Dongmoonsun』 and its sequel 『Sokdongmoonsun』. In this inquiry, the letters of condolence in 『Dongmoonsun』 and 『Sokdongmoonsun』 are divided into seveal types according to the characterstics of forms; such as the unversal type that has the general form of a letter of condolence, destructive-form type Ⅰ (the preface-omitted type), destructive-form type Ⅱ(this finis-omitted type), and destructive-form type Ⅲ (the preface-and-finis omitted type). The letters of condolence in these books were written in the universal type in Lee Kyoo-bo`s time following the efforts made by Choi Chi-won, Lim Choon, and Lee In-ro, who were before Lee Koo-bo`s time, to search for the universal forms of condolences. It is also recognized that diverse destructive forms were tried by contemporary litterateurs and Buddhist monks, like Choi Hae and Lee Gok. In the light of content characteristics, the letters of condolence can be divided into Confucian, Buddhistic, and Taoistic features in general, and Confucian feature has a few types according to the relationship between the object of condolences and the condoler, such as male to male, male to female, and female to male. In case that the object of condolences is a male, his faithful life as a Confucianst and filial duties as well as his character and karma with the condoler are emphasized. In case that the object of condolences is a female, not only her virtues, filial duties, and character, but also the condoler`s sorrow for her who died without living a happy life to the end are emphasized. Futher inquiry into these writings reveals that letters of condolence in memory of the dead person`s character and merits in life have differences from 傳 (Chun; a biography), 行狀 (Haengjang; a record of the dead person`s achievements), and 墓誌 (Myoji; memorial inscriptions to be entombed) that are mostly about his or her merits and achievements. However, the peculiarities of letters of condolence that make it different from other types of writings is that the preface and the finis have ritual bywords, the body is mostly about private relationship with the dead person as well as about sorrow and lament for the end of the relationship in this world, and that its mainsteam is an intention to mourn and console for the spirit to get into a better world. Taking the stylistic characteristics of letters of condolence into consideration based on form and content characteristics of them and destructive types examined in 『Dongmoonsun』, and further inquiry in comparision with other similar genres will be surely to make this study more meaningful.
