The purpose of this research is to verify the influence of developing and implementing the program of school violence’s prevention considering the characteristics of lower grade of elementary school students’ recognition and social, emotional development. The subjects of this research are two classes in the second grade of ‘S’ elementary school located in Seoul. One class was selected as an experimental group that the program was applied and the other class was selected as a control group that the program was not applied. The following procedure was carried on for research: A program was created on the basis of Chang-dae Kim(2002)’s program development model and was modified, complemented after conducting a pilot research on one class in the second grade of ‘C’ elementary school where it is located in Seoul. After that, the researcher promoted the program and gave the violence prevention program to the research object once a week, 40 minutes per session total for 4 weeks. For the results of this study, the attitude of school violence and the social skill rating system were used for both groups before and after implementing the program and statistics was compiled using SPSS 18.0 program. Additionally, the satisfaction level for the program was analysed and evaluated.
In this research, first, a document research was conducted in order to compose the program of school violence’s prevention considering the characteristics of lower grade of elementary school students’ recognition and social, emotional development. As a result, attitude of school violence, endorsement of friends and social technology were selected as the causes for change of school violence’s prevention. The basic principles of the program were determined as a preventive scientific approach that decreases risks and increases preventive factors and changes in individual’s emotional, social characteristics, class’s atmosphere that doesn’t allow school violence, and development of a right awareness of school violence. According to these principles, specific cases and solutions were presented for the particular children’s development and were comprised of visual medium using videos and slides and education in class unit group discussions and activities, a total of 4 sessions were composed considering the realistic onsite condition. In order to overcome this short sessions, every session was made up of relaxation training, music listening, repetition of previous session and cognitive behavioral intervention.
The results of this study on the adaptation effects of the program of school violence’s prevention on lower grade of elementary school students were as follows: the program indicated positive influences on children’s attitude of school violence and showed increase in social skill and social interaction (self-assertiveness and sympathy) which is a subsidiary factor of social skill and self-control and cooperation. In addition, as a result of evaluating the satisfaction level of the program after implementing it and the observation of researcher, the program seemed to have given a positive influence on the school violence’s prevention for lower grade elementary school students. Therefore, the program developed from this research proved efficacious for school violence’s prevention of lower grade of elementary school students.
The meaning of this research is that it is possible to prevent school violence fundamentally and actively by implementing the program of school violence’s prevention from the period of lower grades of elementary school when morality is developed and sympathetic ability is formed and grew, and gain a foothold that enables effective preventive education established by developing a program in accordance with the interests and development of lower grade of children and verifying its effects. Furthermore, this program was developed in a way that the session period, time and format are appropriate to be used at site and every session is composed with visual medium so that class teachers or professional counsellors can utilize it easily. Therefore, school base expansion can be expected if the program become more generalized and disseminated as the program of school violence’s prevention of lower grade of elementary school students.
