The delivery procedure that is carried out in a Labor Delievery Room(LDR) with a family participation can be a good way of maternity management that can give a positive experience to the woman in labor and her family.
The purpose of the present study is to consider its effect on the anxiety of a primipara. This is a quasi-experimental study with nonequivalent control group post-test design.
The subjects of this study are 60 primiparas (30 in the control, and another 30 in the experimental group) who have had a regular prenatal care from February 5 to March 20, 2002, i an outpatient obstetrics and gynecology of S university medical center located in Seoul.
Using a structured questionnaire, the general characteristics (age, religion, vocation, education, and economic status) and obstetric features of the subjects (gestational age, times of miscarriages, cause of hospitalization, use of parturifacient, and use of analgesics) were measured.
Out of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) written by Spielberger et al. (1970), only the state anxiety inventory was used in the measurement of state anxiety. The subject personally completed the inventory, which consisted of 20 question. It is a scale of 20 to 80 scores. Higher score is interpreted that the degree of anxiety is higher.
Collected data was processed using the SPSS/PS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) program.
The result is as follows :
The state anxiety of the two groups: the average score is 55.63 in the experimental group, and 62.57 in the control group. The state anxiety is lower in the primipara with a family delivery experience in LDR than the control. The difference is statistically significant(t=-2.66, p=.010).
In summary of the above result, a family-participating delivery in LDR is proved to be an effective nursing intervention that reduces the anxiety of a woman in labor in that it decreased the state anxiety of the primiparas.
