리오 버사니의 퀴어한 부정성: 친밀함을 넘어서는 󰡔친밀함의 가능성들󰡕 = The Queer Negativity of Leo Bersani: Intimacies beyond Intimacy

국문 초록 (Abstract)

󰡔친밀함의 가능성들󰡕에서 리오 버사니는 가까이 있음을 전제하되 성적인 애착을 결정적 기반으로 삼거나 성욕의 만족을 불가피한 목적지로 삼지 않는 친밀함의 가능성들을 상상한다. 이 글에서 필자는 그의 저작 󰡔친밀함󰡕을 창으로 삼아, “반사회적 논제”로 동성애에 관한 논의의 가능성을 확장시킨 버사니의 ‘퀴어’한 논점들을 살펴보고 그가 남성동성애를 매개로 전개하는 비평의 의미를 검토한다. 특히 1987년에 발표된 버사니의 기념비적 에세이 ｢직장(直腸)이 무덤인가?｣가 던지는 질문들을 통해 그의 문제틀과 이후 전개될 비평적 시선의 궤적을 살펴볼 것이다. 이 글에서 그가 ‘부정성’의 정치적 의미를 견인하는 현실의 존재 양식이자 정체성으로서 동성애를 매개로 남성성의 특권적 모델을 허물기 시작하기 때문이다. 이어서, 약 20년 뒤에 출판된 󰡔친밀함󰡕에서 그 질문들이 어떻게 다시 자아와 관계라는 핵심어로 표면화되고 응답되는지를 가늠해 보고자 한다. 퀴어 주체의 손쉬운 복권에 대한 회의주의적 입장을 고수해 온 그의 저항적 사유는 ‘반사회적’이라는 간판을 달게 되었지만, 그의 그 ‘반사회성’은 섹스의 폭력성과 마조히즘의 자아 파괴에 대한 성찰을 통해 새로운 자아와 관계의 가능태를 모색한다. 이 글은 동성애를 매개로 하는 버사니의 부정성의 사유가 기존의 사회적 관계가 전제하는 주체와 욕망의 함정을 넘어서는 새로운 사회성의 모델을 향하는 일종의 윤리적 변증법의 구도 위에 서 있다고 보고, 이것이 시사하는 퀴어 존재론의 함의들에 비평적으로 접근한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In Intimacies, Leo Bersani, a leading queer theorist and literary critic whose work has been long devoted to the resistant logic of queer negativity, imagines possibilities of intimacy that are not predicated upon desire, which do not degenerate into mastery or possession of the other. This essay, in an attempt to introduce Bersani’s provocative notion of queer negativity, aims to expand, within Korean academia, the much needed discursive space where male homosexuality and related queer issues may be more actively explored.
This essay examines how Bersani’s notion of sexuality has been deployed as that which disrupts and shatters the ego, based on Freud’s theory. This notion of sexuality as disruptive, violent force leads Bersani to explicate the impossibility and futility of normalizing or pastoralizing sex. The significance of Bersani’s queer negativity is most importantly found in his radical dislocation of masculine (homo)sexuality from the privileged model of the cartesian masculine ego, in his controversial reading of the AIDS panic and of the gay subculture of “barebacking,” respectively in “Is the Rectum a Grave?” and Intimacies.
From his refusal to seek redemptive value of either sex or art, however, springs his own project of “redeeming” ethical positions of the ego based on the mobility and flexibility of the ego boundary, which in turn may enable non-relational relations of impersonal narcissism. Such is an irony that envelops his queer negativity, which becomes a basis of his precarious yet powerful queer ontology that supports the nonconformist position of the queer.
