상징과 알레고리: 낭만주의 미적 체험의 구조 = Symbol and Allegory: The Structure of the Aesthetic Experience in the Romantic Era

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 예술적 체험의 본질을 19세기 낭만주의와 관련된 철학자, 시인, 비평가들의 저작들을 검토하여 탐구한다. 루소와 칸트, 워즈워스와 코울리지, 카스파 다비드 프리드리히 등의 저작과 작품을 자크 데리다, 폴 드 만, 캐시 커루스 등의 비평에 비추어 살펴봄으로써 낭만주의의 여러 담론적 사유가 가졌던 특징과 한계, 그리고 가능성을 논의하고 있다. “목적 없는 합목적성,” “반성적 판단” 등의 칸트의 개념들이 코울리지에 의해 수용되어 상징의 유기적 문학형식이 탄생하는 과정과 그 시적 표현들이 함축하고 있는 동시대의 담론적 전략의 의미를 밝히는 과정에서 폴 드 만의 “시간성의 수사학”의 개념을 적용한다. 또한 낭만주의자들은 상징의 제유적 사유를 통해 시간성에 대한 불안을 은폐하려고 하지만, 상징과 그것이 지시하는 개념 사이의 외연상의 차이가 내포하는 불일치에 대한 인식이 상징을 반복의 서사적 형태로 압박하여 기호 사이의 아이러니를 드러내는 것이 알레고리의 본질이라는 점도 분석하고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper approaches the problem of the nature of the aesthetic experience, analyzing the Romantic philosophical discourses of Rousseau, Kant, and Coleridge in relation to the artworks of Wordsworth and Caspar David Friedrich. All of these Romantic texts are discussed in lights of the postmodern theories offered by Jacques Derrida, Paul de Man and Cathy Caruth. In the course of analysis, it reveals the traits, limitations and possibility of the Romantic discourses. Following these Romantic discursive positions, it is shown that Coleridge’s concept of symbol and his insistence on organic literary form were based on Kant’s philosophical concepts such as “purposiveness without purpose” and “reflective judgment.” By drawing on Paul de Man’s “rhetoric of temporality,” this paper demonstrates that the Romantic conception of symbol contains aporetic moments of nonclosure in itself, which touch off the temporal ordering of narrative repetitions. Furthermore, the synecdochal thinking of the Romantic symbol seeking a full presence of meaning in it is seen to be a defensive strategy to hide from anxiety caused by time’s recurring impacts on the Romantic artists, but the consciousness of the imbalance between symbol and its concept forces it to find its supplementary mediation in the form of temporal repetitive narratives, revealing the allegorical irony in the difference between literary signs.
