The Role of Morphological Awareness in Hanja as a Part of Korean Language Acquisition in India

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

International Journal of Korean Language Education 3(2), 61-80. Of late, morphological awareness has become increasingly recognized as an important factor that influences new word acquisition as well as enhancing a learner’s word reading and reading comprehension. Studies on morphological awareness have suggested that morphological awareness in one language helped predict a noteworthy variance in reading words in another language. This implies that morphological awareness enables word reading across different orthographies. However, most of these studies have only focused on morphological awareness when it comes to English language acquisition.
Therefore, this paper seeks to look into the role that morphological awareness has to play in cross language transfer focusing primarily on English and Korean language. Furthermore, it looks into the application of this role that morphological awareness has to play in the context of India.

최근에 들어서서 외국어 교육에서 새로운 단어를 익히거나 읽기와 독해에 있어서 형태소 인식이 중요한 화두로 떠오르고 있다. 형태소 인식에 대한 연구에서 학습자 언어의 형태소 인식은 목표 언어의 실제적인 읽기와 독해의 다양한 내용을 유일하게 예상하게 해준다고 주장하고 있다. 대부분의 연구에서 형태소 인식은 영어를 배울 때 중요성을 두고 있다. 이 연구에서는 영어
교육에 있어서 중점을 두는 형태소 인식이 영어 교육에 이어 한국어 교육에서는 어떠한 역할을 할 수 있는지를 논의하고자 한다. 이를 통해 인도내 한국어 교육에서 형태소 인식의 역할을 통한 한자어 한국어 어휘 학습효과를 모색하고자 한다.
