The Product Liability (PL) Law came into effect on and after July. 1. this year in Korea. This law is expected to put much more responsibility on manufacturing firms for their products. With the new PL law consumers have the right to sue manufactures for losses stemming from defective products.
The Korean companies, therefore, are rushing to prepare measures that will minimize damage in every industry sector such as automobile, electronic products, electrical, products, household goods, chemical products, gas/petroleum equipment, and machinery, etc. There are a lot of countermeasures to be ready for it. For many Korean companies, most of the efforts so far have been concentrated on establishing specialized task force teams that can control conflicts at early stages as well as modifying product safety aspects of manufacturing. Known specific actions include forming product liability departments, reevaluating all manufacturing procedures from design to production to transportation from safety perspectives, training product liability specialists and educating general employees about the new law.
And the companies should also launch public relations efforts informing consumers about the implications of the product liability law as well as planning recall systems so that they can retrieve products speedily in emergencies. And the company also needs to run an educative program for all of its regular employees to get used to the PL mind as well as setting up an upgraded product approval system that will help produce goods that meet PL standards. Therefore, in this study, we will see how to develop effective PL-related countermeasures of the participating industries (companies) through searching substantial cases that can help understanding the real effects of the PL law for companies.
