<호질>에 나타난 창귀의 표상과 문학사적 의의 = The Emblem of Changgwi and the Significance of Literary History in Hojil

This paper examines the aspects of Changgwi appearing in Hojil and its literary value. First of all, the existence of Changgwi was identified by examining the Changgwi appearing in the ancien documents and Yadam. Next, the aspects of Changgwi appearing in Hojil was examined. Finally, the symbol of Changgwi appearing in Hojil was revealed, and the significance of literary history in relation to Changgwi was considered. The summary of the discussion content is as follows.
First, the Changgwi that appearing in the ancien documents and Yadam were reviewed. Changgwi appears in many ancien documents and collection of Yadam published in the 17th and 18th centuries. And Park Ji-won accepted the story of Changgwi, which was common at the time, in Hojil.
Second, the aspect of Changgwi in Hojil was examined. Park Ji-won criticized the hypocritical figure of the doctor·shaman·Confucian scholar of the time through the passage of conversation between the Changgwi and tiger in Hojil.
Third, the existence symbolized by the Changgwi appearing in Hojil was find out. This paper saw that Park Ji-won presented the Changgwi in Hojil to criticize the Joseon Dynasty, which failed to protect its subjects. Changgwi is a ghost in which a person who being eaten by a tiger becomes a salve to a tiger, and can be said to be a symbol of powerless subjects who being eaten by a tiger without the protection of the nation.
Fourth, the significance of literary history in relation to the Changgwi was considered. the motif of criticizing human using Changgwi or tiger has been accepted and developed in classical prose in the order of tale·Yadam·novel through history. Therefore, it can be said that the significance of literary history isn’t small.
