In spark ignition engines, one of the best methods to improve efficiency and power is increasing compression ratio of the engine.<br/>
As compression ratio increses. characteristic of combustion changes. Combustion phenomena can be reprensented by variables calculated from the pressure measurement which are maximum pressure,crank angle at maximum pressure, indicated mean effective<br/>
pressure(IMEP), etc. Also anaIysed using variables such as initial flame developing period and rapid burning period. In our experiment, we have increased compression ratio by reducing the thickness of gasket and reducing the volume of combustion chamber with modification of cylinder head without significant change in the shape of combustion chamber. We have increased the compression ratio to 6.1, 6.25, 6.78, respectively from the original 5.7, and for each compression ratio variables mentioned above were measured for 100 cycles at 2400,2600,2800,3000 RPM. Results show that the increase in compression ratio causes the increase in the maximum pressure and the decrease in the combustion period. IMEP, however, increases through compression ratio of 6.1 to 6.25, while at 6.78, it decreases radically due to the lack of cooling effect. Increase in compression ratio also causes decrease in cycle-by-cycle variation and increase in combustion stability.<br/>
