This study seeks to provide guidance for the comprehensive appreciation
of Royal Ancestral Shrine Music by addressing its teaching and learning
aspects. Royal Ancestral Shrine Music is a national intangible culturalasset
of Korea that was selected by the UNESCO as a masterpiece of the oral
and intangible heritage of humanity on May 18, 2001. Middle school music
subject textbooks structuralize the education contents based on the
curriculum in a way to help students learn the value and significance of
Royal Ancestral Shrine Music in terms of cultural history. Music
textbooks, however, present no specific guidance in this regard, and
previous studies are not applicable to school settings since they focus on
the perspective of education methodologies. This study endeavors to put
forth guidance that facilitates the teaching and learning of Royal Ancestral
Shrine Music within the context of comprehensive music appreciation
classes that require students' active participation based on the standards
for achievement of music appreciation in school music class settings.
The proposed guidance for teaching/learning of Royal Ancestral Shrine
Music for comprehensive music appreciation was designed to analyze
musical elements of Royal Ancestral Shrine Music—music, singing, and
dance—in each unit of the class and to experience Royal Ancestral Shrine
Music comprehensively based on understanding of the historical and
cultural context as well as actual performance of music. Such music
appreciation activity helps students' cultivate capabilities intended by the
music subject as they actively listen and respond to music. In addition,
students can understand the symbolic system and inherent meaning of
musical elements of Royal Ancestral Shrine Music—music, singing, and
dance—, thereby internalizing Korean traditional music.
Royal Ancestral Shrine Music bears the significant universal values that
need to be preserved. It is necessary to develop teaching plans based on
the curricula and textbooks of the music subject so that students can
understand and internalize the broad range of values of Royal Ancestral
Shrine Music. It is expected that the teaching/learning guidance proposed
by this study is efficiently utilized as an effective teaching/learning
material in school settings and contributes to students' deeper of Korean
traditional music understanding
