This study examines the modern reconfiguration of the Secretariat Building, a representative colonial architecture in Yangon, and its reinterpretation as an urban space. The Secretariat once served as the central administrative institution under British colonial rule and was also a significant historical site in the Burmese independence movement. Abandoned during the military regime, the building has recently undergone restoration and conservation, and has been transformed into a multi-functional cultural space hosting exhibitions, cultural events, and educational programs.
This research specifically analyzes how the colonial Secretariat Building is reinterpreted and utilized in contemporary society, exploring the modern significance and value of colonial cultural heritage. In particular, it examines how the building is employed and perceived today, its role in shaping the city’s cultural identity, and how the meaning of the space has changed in practical terms. Through this analysis, the study demonstrates that the modern reconfiguration of the Secretariat extends beyond mere physical preservation, enhancing public accessibility and participation, while functioning as a place where citizens can engage with and share the city’s history and collective memory.
Furthermore, public perception of colonial buildings, which was previously marked by indifference due to political and social factors, is gradually changing. This study interprets how the Secretariat is experienced by contemporary citizens and how it generates meaning in today’s urban context. Finally, it situates the transformation of the Secretariat within discussions on heritage preservation and cultural identity, showing that the reconfiguration of colonial architecture is not only a social negotiation over historical heritage but also plays a significant role in enriching the cultural and social experience of contemporary urban space in Myanmar.
