This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the preservation status of Gia Định Báo (Gia Dinh Newspaper, 1865–1909), the first Vietnamese Quốc ngữ newspaper, by examining major archival collections in Vietnam and abroad. As a foundational medium in the formation of modern Vietnamese language and journalism, Gia Định Báo played a crucial role in the standardization of Vietnamese orthography, style, and vocabulary. However, due to colonial rule and prolonged warfare, a substantial portion of its original issues has been lost, and the surviving materials are now dispersed across multiple institutions. To overcome the limitations of previous studies that relied on single-archive collections, this research employs a qualitative archival analysis based on cross-verification of holdings from five major repositories: the Ho Chi Minh City Museum of History Library, the General Sciences Library of Ho Chi Minh City, the National Library of Vietnam, the Bibliothèque nationale de France, and the East View digital archive. The findings reveal severe imbalances in year-by-year preservation and recurrent metadata errors, which are closely associated with the weakening of editorial and administrative systems from the late 1890s onward. After deduplication, approximately 1,044 extant issues are identified, while the total number of issues published over forty-five years is estimated at around 1,799. By empirically delineating the actual scope of preservation, this study provides foundational data for future integrated digital archive construction.
