니노 카루소의 건축도자에 관한 연구 = A Study on Architecture Ceramics of Nino Caruso

This study examined the modular structure, a characteristic of the works of Italian Ceramic Artist Nino Caruso (1928～) and their formative background. Dividing Nino Caruso’s works by the characteristic differences rather than by the period, it discussed them. The greatest impacts on Nino Caruso’s Architecture Ceramics were Islamic modules, Greek geometric motifs, the Mediterranean images, and formative characteristics accumulated based on his artistic and visual experiences in his childhood, which have served as the backgrounds of his works. In terms of techniques of the production of works, he has introduced the concept of design in producing modules, created them based on repeatability and continuity, and gave birth to a system that can correspond with architecture. Especially, paying attention to industrial aspects, he has studied structures that can be mass-produced and combined to urban architecture, so that he produced a chance for Architecture Ceramics to be able to realize ‘publicness.’ He opened a new horizon of Post-modern Ceramics in the mid-20th century beyond the limits of modular works by finding a common ground through a lot of discussion with architects and by creating irregular sculptures with graphical styles, which were almost geometrical shapes. Especially, under the situations of reality in which contemporary ceramics already considered ‘publicness’ and ‘popularization’ in the issue of its ‘artistic value,’ he proposed a direction of Architecture Ceramics, introduced contemporary design concepts to ceramics, and discussed a new concept of ‘The roles of decoration’ through a clear and fundamental form. His efforts like these can be said to have served as the main driving force for drawing out various attempts of the next generation ceramic artists.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 이탈리아의 도예가 니노 카루소(Nino Caruso, 1928～)를 대상으로 그의 작품의 특성인 모듈구조와 조형적 배경을 고찰했다. 니노 카루소의 작품을 시기적으로 구분하지 않고 작품의 특성적 차이를 중심으로 분리하여 논하였다. 니노 카루소의 건축도자에 가장 큰 영향을 준 것은 이슬람의 모듈과 그리스의 기하학적 모티브로 어린 시절의 예술적, 시각적 경험을 기반으로 축적된 지중해적 이미지와 조형적 특성으로 그의 작품적 배경으로 작용한다. 작품제작의 기술면에서는 모듈을 제작하는데 있어 디자인적 개념을 도입시켜 반복성과 연속성에 입각하여 창작하고 건축에 부합될 수 있는 시스템으로 탄생시켰다. 특히 산업적 측면에 주목하여 대량생산이 가능하고 도시건축과 통합할 수 있는 구조를 연구하여 건축도자가 ‘공공성’을 실현할 수 있는 계기를 만들었다. 그는 건축가들과의 많은 토론을 통해 그 합의점을 찾아내고 기하형태에 가까운 도식적인 스타일의 불규칙조형을 만들어냄으로써 모듈작품의 한계를 넘어서 20세기 중반, 포스트모더니즘 도예의 새로운 지평을 열었다. 특히 현대도자가 이미 그 ‘예술성’의 문제에 있어 ‘공공성’과 ‘대중화’를 고려하는 현실적 상황 속에서 건축도자가 나아가야할 길을 제시하고 현대 디자인개념을 도예에 도입하여 명확하고 근원적인 형태를 통해 ‘장식의 역할’에 대한 새로운 개념을 논하였다. 그의 이러한 노력들은 차세대 도자예술가들의 다양한 시도를 끌어내는데 주요한 견인차역할을 했다고 볼 수 있다.
