성장주의적 교회의 재생산: 재미한인교회와 인프라스트럭처의 정치 = Reproduction of the Growth-Oriented Church: Korean American Church and the Politics of Infrastructure

This paper approaches the study of a Korean American church through the lens of the politics of infrastructure. Despite having been asked to do an active role within the Korean community since the 1992 riots in Los Angeles, Korean American churches, through their growth-oriented ideology, still value the prosperity of individual churches. To better understand this juxtaposition of purpose, this study investigated a case of church conflict over the parking lot site of a megachurch. This conflict emerges when the pastor’s sermon and leadership do not translate into a tangible infrastructure. I define the pastor’s charismatic leadership represented by the sermon as ‘soft,’ intangible infrastructure that can promote church growth, which is distinct from ‘hard,’ tangible infrastructure, such as real estate. When this intangible infrastructure properly works for church growth, the medium like human language and materiality of infrastructure becomes invisible as part of transcendental religiosity. However, when translation fails, the human and secular character of the infrastructure becomes visible as an object of church conflict. This study analyses the parking lot controversy as a case study of the conflict in the Korean immigrant church and how the parking lot became a symbolic arena in the church dispute.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 1992년 LA폭동 이후 한인사회를 위해서 보다 적극적 역할을담당할 것이 요청되어 온 한인교회에서, 여전히 개별 교회의 성장을 중시하는 성장주의적 이데올로기가 작동하고 있음을 인프라스트럭처의 정치라는 관점에서 접근하고자 한다. 이를 분석하기 위해서 본 연구는 무형의 인프라스트럭처인 담임목사의 설교 및 리더쉽이 유형의 인프라스트럭처로번역되지 않는 과정에서 벌어진 한 대형교회의 주차장 부지를 둘러싼 갈등양상을 다루었다. 연구자는 한인교회 내에서 교회 성장의 주요한 인프라스트럭처로 여겨지는 설교로 대표되는 담임목사의 카리스마적 리더쉽을 무형의 인프라스트럭처로 정의하고, 이 무형의 인프라스트럭처가 교회 성장으로 잘 번역될 때 언어 및 물적 인프라스트럭처가 초월적 종교성의 일부가 되어서 비가시화되는 반면, 그 번역이 실패할 때 인프라스트럭처의 인간적, 세속적 성격이 논쟁의 대상으로 가시화되는 모습을 살펴보고자 한다. 본 연구는 특히 재미한인교회에서 갈등의 주된 원인이 되는 주차장 부지에주목하고, 교회 내부의 갈등 과정에서 주차장 부지가 분쟁의 전면에 소환되는 과정을 살펴본다.
