Dark circles are a form of pigmentation that changes the color of the skin under the eye. Reducing dark pigmentation in the under-eye area requires management of both skin moisturizing and regeneration simultaneously. The current study sought to evaluate the effect of differing concentrations of glycolic acid applied with cosmetic patches to dark under-eye circles. Eye patches containing glycolic acid (GA) were prepared at concentrations of 1% and 3% GA.
Thirty women were divided into 3 groups: control (10), 1% GA (10) and 3% GA (10). The eye patch was applied twice a week for 4 weeks and changes in dark circles were measured. In the trans-epidermal water loss(TEWL) results, water loss of the 1% GA group and the 3% GA group reduced from 1 to 3 weeks, and reduced significantly from 1 to 2 weeks, but control group did not change. Melanin and erythema levels were significantly decreased from the baseline after 3 weeks in 1% GA, whereas after 2 weeks in 3% GA(p<0.05). Results of the dark circle colorimetric study indicate that lightness (L*) in 3% GA and 1% GA increased significantly in the first and second week, respectively. Redness (a*) and yellowness (b*) increased significantly in the 3% GA group at the week one measurement, an effect that was not seen in the 1% GA group. Results indicated that the use of eye patch products containing 1% GA and 3% GA effectively reduced the pigmentation of dark under-eye circles. Though there were no significant differences in melanin and erythema levels between the 1% GA and 3% GA groups, reduction of pigmentation was more effective in 3% GA than 1% GA based on the dark circle colorimetric results. In conclusion, these results suggest that eye patches containing 3% GA are effective in reducing pigmentation of dark under-eye circles.
