Online reviews can be seen as a social network where users share thoughts, given that they can freely write reviews and refer to each other's reviews to make a decision. This study constructs the reviewer-restaurant bipartite network and observed changes in users' evaluation and restaurant popularity to analyze dependency between review events. The reviews on Yelp.com over the past twelve years are transformed into a bipartite network consisting of two sets of nodes: reviewers and restaurants. When a consumer leaves a review on a restaurant, an edge is created between the reviewer and the restaurant. As new reviews, reviewers, and restaurants appear, the network evolves. With the Relational Event Model (REM) proposed by Butts (2008), this study evaluates the influence of reviews in terms of reproduction of reviews and compares them according to different types of reviewers and restaurants.
First, we observe the cyclical process in which users accept reviews and rewrite reviews. Then we analyze the bipartite review network through the relational event model (REM) and distinguish the effect of the target network's previous activity on a future, new review event. In particular, REM is used to estimate the probability of an edge creation -a new review occurrence - between a reviewer node and a restaurant node, reflecting past network structures.
On the other hand, Yelp allows all users to write online reviews and certifies users as elite. We compare the difference in the degree of contribution in a series of review-reproduction processes, depending on the type of user and the restaurant's operational period. As a result, the analysis reconfirms that the restaurant which previously had more reviews and the higher average rating is expected to be reviewed again in the next period at a relatively higher rate. Likewise, an elite user's review and evaluation significantly affect the restaurant's likelihood of being reviewed again. Furthermore, if a restaurant has fewer elite user reviews than the overall reviews, more reviewers are likely to review again in that restaurant. Such a tendency to follow elite users and write an additional review becomes more prominent in restaurants in an early stage.
This paper makes three research contributions. First, we enabled the network analysis by reconstructing a bipartite reviewer-restaurant network from real-world online review data. Second, we initiated to analyze networks with REM, deviating from traditional actor-oriented qualitative studies. Lastly, we differentiated restaurants and users into different categories and compared the response.
