중복게재의 유형과 판단 기준 = Types and Judgment Criteria of Redundant Publications

국문 초록 (Abstract)

우리는 연구자가 연구 성과를 발표 및 게재하는 과정에서 잘 모르고 한 것이든 의도적으로 한 것이든 연구윤리를 위반하는 대표적인 것으로 표절과 함께 중복게재(redundant publication)가 있다는 것을 알고 있다. 연구윤리의 중요한 하위 영역으로서 출판윤리(publication ethics)가 있는데, 출판윤리에서는 표절과 함께 중복게재 및 저자 자격(authorship)에 관한 쟁점이 핵심적으로 논의되곤 한다. 연구자들 중에는 표절과 함께 중복게재에 대해 많이 궁금해 하는 사람들이 많다. 특히 중복게재의 의미나 그것이 왜 문제가 되는지에 대해서는 어느 정도 알고 있지만 구체적으로 어떤 때에 중복게재에 해당되는지에 대해서는 쉽게 판단할 수 없다고 말한다. 그만큼 중복게재를 둘러싼 논의에서 학문 분야, 연구의 방법이나 특성에 따라 중복게재를 판단하는 요소나 기준에서 차이가 크기 때문이다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 중복게재를 둘러싼 여러 쟁점과 관련하여 연구자들이 보다 명확하게 알고 싶어 하고 또 구체적인 설명이 필요하다고 느끼고 있는 질문들을 모아 이에 답하고자 한다. 이를 위해 필자는 평소 대학의 교수나 대학원생 그리고 연구소의 연구자를 대상으로 연구 윤리 강의를 했을 때 나왔던 질문들과 이메일이나 학술 행사 등에서 개인적으로 받았던 질문들을 몇 가지로 유형화하여 이에 대한 필자의 견해를 밝히는 방식으로 기술하였다.

We know that plagiarism and redundant publications are typical examples of violating research ethics, whether done intentionally or unknowingly in the process of announcing and publishing research results. Publication ethics presents itself as an important sub-area of research ethics. In publication ethics, issues related to plagiarism, redundant publication and authorship are often discussed as core issues. Among researchers, there are many people who are curious about redundant publications along with plagiarism. Researchers say that they want to know to some extent the meaning of redundant publication and why it is a problem but cannot easily determine when specifically the term redundant publication is applicable. This is because, in the discussion related to redundant publications, there is a large difference in judgment criteria of redundant publications depending on the academic field and the method or characteristics of research. Therefore, this paper analyzes the issues of redundant publication and suggests desirable publication practices which researchers should understand and comply with. To this end, I have collected the most pertinent questions from audiences and researchers who have attended my research ethics lecture and respond them. I usually categorize the questions I received when I lectured on research ethics for university professors, graduate students, and researchers at research institutes, as well as the questions I received personally via e-mails and at academic conferences, and here I describe my views on them. Researchers should present the sources adequately and clearly when they use their previously published papers. It is recognized that when researchers publish their paper whose content was the same or substantially like that of a previously published one without adequate cross-referencing and then take advantage of it unduly, that is unjustifiable redundant publication.
