집시 재즈 음악에 나타난 바이올린 연주의 특징 분석 연구 : - Quintette du Hot Club de France의 "Minor Swing", "Daphne", Nuages"를 중심으로 - = A study on the properties of violin performance shown on the gypsy jazz music

The current paper is a study on the properties of violin performance shown on the Gypsy Jazz Music. The Gypsy Jazz Music integrates with the local ethnic music and shows Gypsy Music’s unique sorrowful melody and scales. The composers of classical music with such properties composed by introducing the properties in their own work, and the violin music works consisted the majority of the cases.
For Jazz Music, guitarist Django Reinhardt with Gypsy background created Gypsy Jazz Music integrating Gypsy Music and Swing. Django Reinhardt worked as Quintette du Hot Club de France which is the origin of Gypsy Jazz Music with Gypsy violinist Stephane Grappelli. The Gypsy Jazz Music consists of three guitars, a violin and a base, and the music progresses with the solo of the violin. The study conducted research focusing on the performance of the violin. Studies on the violin on the classical Gypsy Music is still on the way, but studies on the Gypsy Jazz Music currently incomplete.
The research establishes basic foundation prior to the research by heightening the degree of understanding on the historical background by considering the Gypsy Music and Gypsy Jazz Music, and looking through the musical elements of Gypsy Music acting as the foundation of Gypsy Jazz Music. Moreover, the research establishes theoretical background of violin performance technique required for the analysis research, and analyzes the properties of violin performance shown in “Minor Swing", “Daphne”, “Nuages” among the musics of ‘Quintette du Hot Club de Franc’ which is the origin of Gypsy Jazz Music. The results are as follows.

First, The composition of the melody is centered on the chord tone, and the arpeggio is frequently used and played. Especially, chromatic approach note is used to make the connection natural with the code tone. Also, the melody with the form of descending progress after a skip was frequent
Second, characteristic sound of gypsy minor and major showed as the approach note in the music, and the 4 sound which is the characteristic sound of gypsy minor was identical with the blue note of blues scale.
Third, the music plays eighth note based on the swing rhythm, and adds rhythms by using syncopation.
Fourth, the music repeatedly used the same figure by arranging the rhythm, prelude, and beat differently.
Fifth, the music uses various violin styles, and the common styles regardless of the speed of the music were the scoop with ascending progress among vibrato, ornament and scoop.
Sixth, the music added rhythms by using ghost note on the musics with fast tempo, and finished the music by using the fall off with descending progress on the end part of the phrase. And on the musics with slow tempo, the music frequently used grace notes to decorate the melody.

The Gypsy Jazz Music is composed based on the melodic and rhythmic properties of Gypsy Music and the rhythms of Swing Jazz, and the same properties were shown on the violin performance. Currently, the range of the study is wide and the subject of the analysis has a limit that the musics are only three musics of Quintette du Hot Club de France under the condition that the studies on the Gypsy Jazz Music and Jazz Violin are incomplete. I hope the study would be a help to the understanding on the Gypsy Jazz Music and on the analysis of the properties of violin.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 집시 재즈 음악(Gypsy Jazz Music)에 나타난 바이올린 연주의 특징 분석 연구이다. 집시음악은 각 나라의 현지 민족음악과 융합되어 집시 음악 특유의 애수적인 선율과 음계가 나타난다. 이러한 집시음악의 특징을 많은 클래식 작곡가들이 자신들의 작품에 도입시켜 작곡하였고, 특히 바이올린 곡이 대다수를 차지했다.
재즈에서는 집시 출신 기타리스트 장고 라인하르트(Django Reinhardt)에 의해 집시 음악과 스윙(Swing)을 융합한 집시 재즈 음악이 만들어졌다. 장고 라인하르트는 집시 바이올리니스트 스테판 그라펠리(Stephane Grappelli)와 함께 집시 재즈 음악의 기원인 ‘퀸텟 두 핫클럽 드 프랑스’(Quintette du Hot Club de France, QHCF)로 활동하였다. 기타 세대와 바이올린, 베이스로 구성되며 기타와 바이올린의 솔로로 곡이 진행되는 집시 재즈 음악에서 필자는 바이올린의 연주에 집중하여 연구하게 되었다. 클래식 집시악곡에 대한 바이올린 연구는 계속 이루어지고 있지만, 집시 재즈 음악의 바이올린에 대한 연구는 현재 미비한 상태이다.
본 연구의 내용은 먼저 집시음악과 집시 재즈 음악에 관한 고찰을 통하여 역사적 배경에 대한 이해를 높이고, 집시 재즈 음악의 바탕이 되는 집시음악의 음악적 요소에 대하여 알아봄으로써 연구에 앞서 기본적인 토대를 마련한다. 그리고 분석연구에 필요한 바이올린 연주 기법의 이론적 배경을 다지며, 집시 재즈 음악의 기원인 ‘퀸텟 두 핫클럽 드 프랑스’의 악곡 중 “Minor Swing”, “Daphne”, “Nuages”에 나타난 바이올린 연주의 특징을 분석하는 것으로 구성된다. 연구를 통하여 얻은 결과는 다음과 같다.

첫째, 선율의 구성이 코드톤(Chord tone)을 중심으로 이루어지며 아르페지오(Arpeggio)를 자주 사용하여 연주하고, 특히 크로매틱 어프로치 노트(Chromatic approach note)를 사용하여 코드톤으로의 연결을 자연스럽게 하였다. 그리고 도약진행 후 하행진행 하는 형태의 선율이 많이 나타났다.
둘째, 집시 단음계(Gypsy minor)와 집시 장음계(Gypsy major)의 각 특징 음이 곡에서 어프로치 노트로 나타났으며, 집시 단음계의 특징음인 4음은 블루스 스케일(Blues scale)의 블루 노트(Blue note)와도 동일하였다.
셋째, 8분 음표를 스윙리듬을 기반으로 연주하고, 스윙에서 자주 나타나는 동시에 집시 음악의 리듬적 특징인 당김음(Syncopation)과 그 외에 셋잇단음표, 장식음 등의 사용으로 리듬감을 더했다. 이처럼 집시 음악과 재즈 음악의 특징 양쪽에 해당하는 음악적 요소가 주로 나타나며 특히 재즈적인 음악요소가 다분하였다.
넷째, 동일한 음형을 리듬과 전조, 박자 배치를 다르게 하여 반복 사용함으로써, 곡에 통일감을 주었다.
다섯째, 다양한 바이올린 주법을 사용하여 연주하며, 곡의 빠르기에 상관없이 공통적으로 비브라토(Vibrato)와 장식음(Ornament), 상행 진행하는 슬라이드 주법(Scoop)이 나타났다.
여섯째, 빠른 박자의 곡에서는 고스트 노트(Ghost note)를 사용하여 리듬감을 더하였고, 하행 진행하는 슬라이드 주법(Fall-off)을 프레이즈의 마지막에 사용하여 마무리 하였다. 그리고 느린 박자의 곡에서는 장식음을 많이 사용하여 선율을 화려하게 꾸며주었다.

집시 재즈 음악은 집시 음악의 선율적, 리듬적 특징과 스윙재즈의 리듬을 바탕으로 구성되어져 있으며, 집시 음악만의 특징보다는 집시음악과 재즈의 공통적인 특징이 될 수 있는 당김음, 장식음과 같은 음악적 요소가 더 지배적인 것으로 보인다.
현재 집시 재즈 음악과 재즈 바이올린에 대한 연구가 미비한 상태에서 본 연구의 범위가 넓고 분석 대상이 ‘퀸텟 두 핫클럽 드 프랑스’의 세 곡이라는 것에 한계가 있지만, 본 연구가 집시 재즈 음악에 대한 전반적인 이해와 함께 바이올린 특징 분석에 도움이 되길 바란다.
