<태백산맥>에 형상된 미시사와 대중성 = Microscopic History and Popular Appeal Illustrated in The Taebaek Mountains

국문 초록 (Abstract)

<태백산맥>은 전체 10권으로 구성된 다권본(多卷本)으로는 처음으로 200쇄를 돌파하는 대중적 성공을 이룬 작품이다. 본고는 작품의 이러한 대중적 성공 요인에 주목한다. 먼저 문학 작품의 대중적 성공은 작품이 시대와 독자의 요구에 적절하게 부합될 때 가능한 결과일 것이다. <태백산맥>이 창작·완간되었던 80년대는 일본에 의한 식민지, 해방, 해방 후 발생한 이데올로기 관련 사건들, 전쟁, 독재정치와 같은 이 땅의 내재된 문제들이 민주화에 대한 요구와 함께 사회적으로 표출되던 시기였다. 이 점은<태백산맥>의 등장시기와 대중적 호응이 무관하지 않음을 추론가능케 한다. 하지만 <태백산맥>의 대중적 성공이 단순히 시대적 문제와 결부된 것이라면 작품이 완간 후 20여년이 지난 지금까지 스테디셀러로 자리매김하는 데 대한 적절한 답이 되지 못할 것이다. 따라서 본고는 <태백산맥>의 대중적 성공의 요인이 시대적 요구에 대한 적절한 부합과 더불어 역사와 인간의 관계에 대한 해명에 있어서 정당성을 얻음으로서 독자의 요구에 부합하고 있다는 점에 있다고 본다. 인간의 생활이 모든 예술의 근원임에는 이론(異論)이 있을 수 없는 것인바, <태백산맥>은 인간 생활의 형상화를 통해 역사를 읽어내어야 하는 역사소설로써의 미덕을 지녔다 할 것이다. 인간의 생활이란 문학작품에 형상되는 개인들의 삶이 다양한 경로에 의해 얽히고설키며 시·공간 속을 변주해가는 모습에 대한 커다란 시각이라 할 수 있다. 인간의 생활이라는 큰 시각을 구성하는 요소는 개인이라는 존재이다. 기존의 역사적 관점에 의하면 개인이란 역사와 상반된 의미로 이해되어 왔다. 개인과 개인의 만남, 우연에 의한 변화, 기억, 개인의 심성에 내재된 다양한 지표들은 역사의 주변부에 존재하는 하위역사 혹은 주관적 요소 인식되었다. 기존 실증적 역사는 역사의 주체인 인간을 역사라는 과제 해명을 통해 적절하게 구현해내지 못했다 할 것이다. 본고는 <태백산맥>이 개인의 삶을 형상화함으로써 기존 역사에 대항한다고 본다. 또한 본고는 개인과 역사의 의미를 읽는데 있어서 미시사를 사용하고자 한다. 미시사는 개인과 역사의 문제를 해명하는 데 있어서 적절한 방법론이 될 것이다. 역사소설은 역사서가 될 수 없다. 하지만 역사소설은 인간의 생활이라는 요소를 적절하게 살려냄으로써 기존 역사의 거시사적 관점을 교정하는 역할을 할 수 있다. 역사란 단순히 결과론적인 계량화가 아닐 것이다. 역사의 주체가 언제나 인간이라는 점에서 역사는 인간에 대한 이해를 그 본질로 삼아야 할 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The Taebaek Mountains consisting a set of 10 volumes is the first to exceed 200th printings, and has achieved popular success. This article takes notice of the factors of popular success this literary work carries. First of all, the popular hit of a literary work can be attributed to proper correspondence with the demands of the times and the readers. In 1980s when The Taebaek Mountains was created and completed, socially expressed and manifested were such inherent issues of this country as Japanese forced occupation, liberation, post-liberation incidents related with ideology, the Korean War, and dictatorship along with the demands for democratization. At this point, it is possible to infer that the introduction time of The Taebaek Mountains matched the public positive response. However, if one says that such popular success of the work is only connected with periodic issues, one cannot answer why it is possible to secure the rank as a steady seller for 20 years after the completion of the piece. Therefore, this article suggests that the popular success of the work derive not only from the proper meeting of demands of the times, but also from appropriate correspondence to the demands of readers through gaining of justifiable explanation regarding the relationship between history and men. As there cannot be a different view that everyday life of a man is base of all arts, The Taebaek Mountains has a virtue of historical novel through vivid figuration of human life and its contemporary history. Everyday life of man is a great view that an individual life is figured in a literary work playing variations along in time and space entangled through various courses. An individual entity is the basic composite element in a great view of so-called human life. According to the existing historical view, an individual is understood as a meaning contrary to history. Encounter between individuals, accidental changes, recollection, and a variety of indicators inbuilt within one's nature were all recognized as a marginal sub-history surrounding a history or subjective factors. Historic demand for empirical measure has not properly realized a man as a agent of history through illustration of his history. Accordingly this paper understands that The Taebaek Mountains confronts the existing history through figuration of an individual. Moreover, this article uses microscopic method to comprehend the historic meaning of an individual. Microscopic research method will be the right and proper way to explain the issues involving an individual and history. A historic novel cannot be a history. Nevertheless, a historic novel can play a role in correcting historic books by suitably reviving everyday life of a man. History could not be just quantifiable results. In that a man is always put as a main agent of history, the comprehending of man as a base of history is crucial in discussing history. In conclusion, popular success of The Taebaek Mountains has a great relevancy with a tremendous appeal to the readers in respect to both the inquisitiveness about issues of man and history presented in the work and their precise figuration.
