In order to meet the world fuel economy standards, the global vehicle market of Hybrid Electric Vehicle(HEV), Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle(PHEV), Battery Electric Vehicle(BEV), and even Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle(FCEV) has been growing rapidly. Among them, PHEV which consists of Charge Depleting mode(CD mode) and Charge Sustaining mode(CS mode) has both characteristics of HEV and BEV. In this paper, the representative PHEVs in Toyota, Honda, and General Motors(GM) are analyzed respectively focusing on the powertrain configurations and control strategies, which is the first step of this study. Based on the conclusion of each characteristic of PHEVs, this study will move on to the next steps for developing the battery control strategy and optimizing the system.
