동아시아의 과거,현재,미래 ; 감정기억의 굴레에서 벗어나기 위하여: 야스쿠니 문제 재론 = To Escape the Bondage of Emotive Memory: Revisiting the Yasukuni Shrine Controversy

Although the Yasukuni controversy has long been subjected to much discussion and criticism, it has not been fully examined why the shrine still brings about one of the major political issues in the contemporary Japanese society. I propose that in order to fully understand this issue, we need to take the view that the shrine is the venue in which post-war Japanese people’s complex feelings and memories of the lost war criss-cross rather than an ideological institution exclusively claimed by one single political entity. In this manuscript, I analyze the characteristic of Yasukuni shrine as the emotive institution as well as the structure of feelings in Japanese society surrounding the shrine. This perspective takes note of Yasukuni shrine as the arena where “community of emotion” sprouted during the war era. Although the symbolic status of Yasukuni shrine during the war was reduced due to the US army military government’s occupation policies and the self-reflective tendency in the post war Japanese society, the shrine did not lose the function of the spiritual centre among the family of deceased soldiers enshrined in Yasukuni. This was possible because the cultural practice of mourning(irei), in which the deceased and mourners spiritually interact with each other, has been performed in the shrine. Furthermore, as 70 years passed since the end of the war, memories about the war at have gradually faded, and the war is now being remembered in different ways than before in and out of Yasukuni shrine. Focusing on Yushukan, a private war-exhibit within Yasukuni, I analyze the symbolic structure and the origin of the power of emotion engendered by the exhibit, and explore how the bondage of the emotive memory can be escaped in the current Japanese society.
